The Negatives For The Positives

The Negatives For The Positives

A Poem by R. L. Ives

Is happiness truly so elusive?
You find it and even hold on to it for a time.
Then life happens and it's gone, leaving you wondering
"was it ever really there to begin with?"
Maybe that's just the nature of it.
Perhaps it's not meant to stay,
but rather ebb and flow like the tide.
Could it be that we have to experience
the absence of happiness at times,
so as not to take it for granted?
After all, we were given the ability to feel a multitude of emotions.
Sadness to know happiness;
anger to learn to forgive;
grief to appreciate life,
and maybe even hate to understand love.
The negatives and positives, the good and the bad.
Learn to feel and stop being life's complication.
Life is complex enough on it's own.

You make good points here. As for myself, I simply don't understand life so I can't give my own opinions with any confidence. Life seems to be just a series of dichotomy's we face all the time. This is a good poem that explores sides to that well.

Good writing.

No problem.
I really like this :D the line: "Could it be that we have to experience the absence of happiness at times, so as not to take it for granted" I absolutely love because of how true it is! It can be all too easy to be happy and not give it a second thought. Adding this to my favourites!
