O Essay, My Essay

O Essay, My Essay

A Poem by R.J. Seoul
"

off Walt Whitman’s “O Captain My Captain”

"

O Essay my Essay! our fearful trip is done,

I’ve read the book’s great pages, and inscribed it with my thoughts,

The time is near, the bells I hear, the people all are sleeping,

Look at my eyes, those bloodshot eyes; my body’s broken - crying;

But O mind! mind! mind!

It is you I pity the most,

Words took daggers to your matter,

Nerves and synapses cold and lifeless.

O Essay! my Essay! you’ve pained me quite enough;

To say the least, a b***h you are;

In Yoda’s gifted tongue.

O Essay!  My Essay!

For you the coldest days in Russia, for you the wettest dog’s tongue

For you the warmest days in Africa, for you the Devil’s Fire;

Here Essay! dear Essay!

There’s water beneath your pages!

No time to turn, reprint yourself!

You've fallen cold and dead.

My Essay does not answer, its ink is running wet;

My essay does not feel my pain, it has no pulse nor will;

The bell is ringing, professor smiling, class, it has begun;

From sleepless night, the prize I had, the pain I wished not true;

Exult O College, and eat O Ramen!

But I, with mournful tread,

Walk the seats, my Essay limp,

Fallen cold and dead.
