Seek First The Kingdom Of God And Receive A Life Of Abundance

A Story by Bishop R. Joseph Owles

Isaiah 55:6 says: “Seek the LORD…” A rabbi once said that the Hebrew word for “seek” used here is “research.” It is not a command to look for, but a command to study, to research, to learn all that you can about the LORD. And of course the purpose of that researching is to use the information.

Jesus says “Seek first the Kingdom of God and its righteousness and all these things will be added to you.” The New Testament was written in Greek, but the word Jesus would have used is the Aramaic work that would be very similar to the Hebrew word. Therefore, Jesus is instructing us to learn, to research, to study the Kingdom of God.

The Kingdom of God can be defined in a couple of ways. We can define kingdom as a geographical area in which a king rules -- Kingdom as in territory or what is within the boundaries. We can also define it as the reign or rule of the king. Most scholars side with the more dynamic “rule of God” or “reign of God.” I define it as “The way God rules.”

So research, study, examine, learn all you can about the way God rules, and its righteousness. Righteousness is not a moral quality as we often use it, but it is being in a right relationship with God. The root of the word is justice and biblical justice is relational. The Bible says that “the righteous” (those who are in a right relationship with God) live by faith. It is faith that puts in that right relationship -- the faith of what God has done for us through Jesus Christ puts us in a right relationship with God -- at least, that is what Saint Paul tells us over and over.

So we are at: First thing: Research, study, examine, learn all you can about the way God rules (the world, the universe), and how to be in a right relationship with God, and all these things will be added to you.

All what things? The context is about not worrying about having enough food, or clothing, or drink, or things necessary for your health or survival, or even about having enough money. What you are worrying about becomes your master, Jesus says, and you cannot serve God if you are going to serve your worry, or serve the objects on which your worry is focused.

But first, Research, study, examine, learn all you can about the way God rules (the world, the universe), and how to be in a right relationship with God, and food, clothing, money, health, necessities, and so much more will be provided for you.

The way to have abundance is not to focus on your lack and try to beg God to fill your lack with stuff, whether they are necessary or not. It is not to focus on the little you have and ask for more, or worry about keeping it. It is to focus on God. Focus on how God rules. Focus on how God has set up the universe. And focus on having a right relationship with God through faith and then abundance will burst into your life. Study and researching how God operates and living in faith that God does indeed operate in this manner, and that if this is how God operates, then this is how God will operate with you as well, then standing on that faith, and believing it and speaking it, all plants seeds that grow into a large harvest of abundance.
