A Constitutional Amendment Forgiving Debt and Banning Interest? I Didn't Think So...

A Story by Bishop R. Joseph Owles

The Bible says not to charge interest on loans a lot more than it says anything that remotely sounds like banning homosexual behavior. It bans the collection of interest nearly 20 times in the Old Testament. Behavior that could be termed "homosexual" is mentioned twice. The Bible bans collecting interest ten times more than it mentions anything that could be used to ban homosexual behavior and marriage.

SO WHY DO I ONLY HEAR ABOUT BANNING HOMOSEXUAL BEHAVIOR BUT I NEVER HEAR ONE WORD ABOUT HOW SINFUL BANKS, BUSINESSES AND OTHERS ARE FOR COLLECTING INTEREST?

Clearly being gay is not as much of a concern to God as collecting interest is! Let’s assume God is not senile and does not repeat Himself because He is absent-minded, but instead, repeats the important parts " especially the important parts that people will tend to ignore " because they are the parts God is concerned about most.

The Bible also says that every fifty years all debt is forgiven, and all property that was sold goes back to the original owners. It COMMANDS this at least 21 times in the first five books of the Old Testament! It mentions behavior that could be termed "homosexual" twice. The Bible COMMANDS people to forgive ALL debt and return property to its original owners ten times more than it mentions anything that could be used to ban homosexual behavior and marriage.

SO WHY DO I ONLY HEAR ABOUT BANNING HOMOSEXUAL BEHAVIOR BUT I NEVER HEAR ONE WORD ABOUT HOW SINFUL BANKS, BUSINESSES AND OTHERS ARE FOR NOT FORGIVING DEBT AND NOT RESTORING PROPERTY BACK TO PEOPLE WHO WERE FORCED TO SELL IT?

Clearly being gay is not as much of a concern to God as forgiving debt and restoring property is! Once more, let’s assume God is not senile and does not repeat Himself because He is absent-minded, but instead, repeats the important parts " especially the important parts that people will tend to ignore " because they are the parts God is concerned about most.

So I will agree to support a Constitutional Amendment banning same-sex marriage AFTER AND ONLY AFTER Bible-thumping Christians pass an Amendment to ban charging interest and to forgive all debt and restore property every fifty years.

If you want to ban same-sex marriage because you think the Bible says so -- great. But if at the same time, you do not want to ban interest, or you are against forgiving debt or returning property every fifty years, then your argument uses the Bible as a matter of convenience, but you do not give a damn about the Bible or God or God's commandments, or you would be concerned with all of them, not just the one that may be mentioned twice. You are actually undermining the Bible and making it a book that is resented by most people, rather than a book that people go to in order to look for consolation and comfort. If you refuse to keep all the commandments, but will impose one of the commandments on others, you are a hypocrite and a bigot. And you make it impossible for those of us who really are trying to live the way Jesus said to love to be taken seriously.

Saint Paul says that if you try to live according to any part of the law, then you are subject to the whole law. If you want to hold others accountable to one part of the law, then you are accountable to the whole law -- even those parts you want to ignore. So stop judging others because they ignore different commandments than the ones you ignore! For that matter, just stop talking altogether. You're not helping anyone.
