The Great CommissionA Story by Bishop R. Joseph Owles
The Great Commission at the end of Matthew's Gospel is not a command to "Go out and make disciples of all nations," it is a statement of being: "Wherever you go in the world, make disciples, baptize them and teach them everything Christ taught, just as Christ taught it."
How did Christ teach? He taught by example. He was what He taught. He did not just lecture, He enacted His teaching; He showed people how to be and what to do. So when we teach others wherever we find ourselves, we are to be examples of our faith, by enacting our faith, by living it in front of others. That is how we teach them everything that Christ has commanded. People learn from watching. Children learn from their parents, not by listening to what they say, but by watching what they do. "The world" that we find ourselves in learn the same way. They learn about Christ by watching what those of us who claim to believe in Him and follow Him do, not by listening to our words. So the question is: "What have we been teaching the world?" © 2013 Bishop R. Joseph Owles |
