~ the poetry of exploration

somewhat poetic prose; i write merely to exercise my right to write; seven earth-like exoplanets discovered

monsieur scalpel,

NASA discovered 7 earth-like exoplanets

and i thought i imagined it

in a groggy mind

which is debating with anti-allergy meds

scientists must be chuckling

because telescopes found new meaning today

and cynics must be despondent

because the theory of bitterness

went flying out of the window

and it's hard to agree with them

up and down

and three ways to sunday

2017 started with the term "post-truth"

being added to our dictionary

thanks to Trump's towers of delusions

existing beyond factual information

which is easily verifiable

then his campaign manager

came up with the term "alternative facts"

which is a new reference to the defence of white lies

the white house press secretary

took these to a new level

by describing absurd "voter fraud" accusations

as a "belief" akin to a religious belief

which cannot be questioned

meanwhile, the "alt right" rattled off 

white supremacist ideas

in a mildly legitimate format

by saying things like

"obama was a divisive leader"

but ultimately science has prevailed

telescopes have seen

seven earth-like exoplanets

bringing the discovery of new facts

back in vogue

and the poetry of exploration

is sparkling with a new zeal

and zest

climate-change deniers

may deny climate-change for a little longer

and "alternative facts"

and "beliefs"

may sing out of tune for a few more months

but the "post-truth" world will not prevail

just because telescopes

and microscopes

and chuckling scientists

thrive in our vicinity

they are as real as their discoveries

and our conversations about them

are as authentic

as my heartfelt attempts

to write verse for you

It's sad that I couldn't be excited about the news for very long until I realized that these greedy sociopaths were most likely trying to figure out how to exploit our new found neighbors just as we are seeing destruction of life right here on our own planet. But, I love science...so in the end...I'm still stoked. Nice poem.

makes me wonder how the future alt-right types will handle issues surrounding the coming inter-solar system exchange of cultures and ideas ... will we still be mired in small-mindedness or will our horizons have managed to expand

Great refrain highlighting that ‘Post-truth’ politics (sometimes called post-factual) is a political culture in which debate is framed largely by appeals to emotion disconnected from the details of policy, and by the repeated assertion of talking points to which factual rebuttals are ignored.
Love your reflections to the current ‘could be life’ planetary discoveries by astrologers; ignoring the fact it would take us 39 light years to get there (my bus pass doesn’t cover that apparently).
