A Poem by Caitlin Cardinal

The heat of July came from more than the sun.
We learned quickly that lemonade does not quench desire.

So we spoke despite our thirst
We touched although we burned
And we swam in lakes of rapture.

We slept in the shade of promises as their leaves began to fall.

And now there is ice on the Mississippi.
Proof that even great things can freeze.
