A Poem by Caitlin Cardinal

As I was staring at the sky
and you were looking at my eyes
a piece of me fell out.

A piece of me fell out
and rolled away
into the shade of that tree
and I felt where it had been a minute ago.

Your head was resting in that place just before,
as if you were holding it in with the pressure of your
thoughts. Which weigh heavy on my mind.

Now it is me
applying pressure,
holding your chest to mine,
hoping you can feel the hole that is left
and pretending you can fill it.
