Rapid Eye Movement

Rapid Eye Movement

A Poem by Caitlin Cardinal

She came to you
seamless.
silent.
and completely
free of flaws.
Her movements were fluid.
Fluid like the
heat that was
pulsing between your
"pillows-for-thighs".
She slowly sat over you,
took your hands as prisoners,
and locked them in her
velvet jail cells.
Fingers for bars,
fists for padlocks.
The radiating heat
was mutual,
and the two swirled together
as she leaned in to your poor, eager expression.
The last remaining inches stood their ground.
She fed you her breath,
exchanged it for yours,
and as her lips sailed across
that tiny sea of oral breezes,
you realized that everything was
dark.
Knotted blankets were your only companion.
The only heat to speak of was
only your own.

And you were so eager to dream you could not fall back asleep.

"Fists for padlocks" is an excellent line. The rest go good with the imagery but this one struck particularly well for me.

"That tiny sea of oral breezes" is also very good.

The only thing that bothered me was that this piece wasn't set in stanzas. I think I'm just used to seeing a break here or there, but it reads differently for everybody. I'm sure nobody else had a problem with that otherwise, this poem is very good.

Whenever I engage in something like this I always return to something like a lucid dream. Dreams are my friends. Only friends. Ah, sigh.

Poetry. It jumps up and bites just when you think you've read it all. I love the words you've written:

eager to dream ...

Wow, this reminds me of a dark, wet dream...scary almost in that it spurs the dreamer to awake...though not really scary, in all actuality, they'd probably like to fall back into that dream. I don't know exactly how to put it my friend, but I like this piece.

Take care.
