Belong

Belong

A Poem by Christopher Ross Livingstone

Belong
Through the course of times
From birth and the touch of a mothers heart
To the time when the parents split
Worlds and times were overwhelming confusing
Questions that we'd ask,
Who do we love?
And when we experience the experiences in between
From the forces that changed where we are
And how we perceive identify and our place to spaces and communities
Family life in my youth were unsettled and turbulent
Never settling and never staying
Left me Where do I belong ?
Living a life in a heteronormative society
Left me searching and seeking
Questioning and wondering
Am I right or wrong
Living in the veil of shame
I would ask where do I belong?
An I struggled with being able to like myself
Times have had me looking for the thrill.
Constantly the high seeker instead of the natural high
Reflection and recovery from the heteronormative world view
Has give me time to look to me
And turn inward
Hearing the song the song,
The rhythm of the heart
Like a mother's love
I ca n now say
I belong

This poem is wonderfully written and really captured my attention. It speak of internal conflict with one's true self and the ideas of precieved societal acceptance. Fighting biases that we are taught through maturity, which may be opposite to our hearts intent. And bliss. Then coming to terms with our true selves and accepting we can't change that, we are who we are. It's what makes us unique and beautiful to our ways. Thank you for sharing your work.
