Hegemony

Hegemony

A Poem by Christopher Ross Livingstone

Hegemony

Like a promise
I was born unto this world like free as a bird
Without weight of norms and expectations

We are all meaning making beings
But from cradle to grave
Teachings from a hegemonic dominance
The power over another
Have taught us norms
And ways to be

My lived experiences has taught me so much
More than words could ever say
Like a moral compass and that promise I mentioned earlier
I began to question
I then began to feel and reimagine my freedom

Like a quiet liberation
Conquering the shame for being gay
The shame bestowed upon me from that dominance above
I knew from that moment on
Possibilities were possible
Smashing the chains of guilt
And the destructive overeating behaviours

I began to humanise the word
I've torn those outdated ways on how to be man
I've come to live a life with a new definition
And like that promise
I've come to question

Our experiences are valuable
Together we're indomitable
As we are meaning making beings
Connection,
Community,
And compassion
Will challenge the dominance
Let's trust our internal dialogue
Begin to question
Because we were born into this world
