Remembering

Remembering

A Poem by Christopher Ross Livingstone

Remembering

Upon refection
Remembering
It's been 14 years since you came to pass
Since that day
I have come on a journey
From morning a loss
To living a new life

I saw him
As he passed
Trying to save a life
But was lost in that blink of an eye
He died at home
And in my arms

Those early days were tough
Processing the thought
 I could've done better
But I remember people saying
I was there and I did my best
Through the days when my Dad was ill
Until he lived his last

Remembering
Those days
Where he made mistakes
His lived experiences
His battles
To his addiction
I took from him
His lessons learned
To how I could live a life
In my definition on how to be a man

He was stubborn
And would not be open about
His addiction
It was harsh
He couldn't see the support people offered
It impacted his day to day life
Connections and relationships
It consumed him

Being homeless and days in the dark
Like a depression
Life was lived
In chaos
But the man
Despite many faults and flaws
Remembering back
Gave me space
A space of acceptance
Open
To be gay

A eulogy in verse here. It is difficult sometimes to come to terms with the death of a difficult parent. In this offering I have the feeling that the speaker, while not denying his father's shortcomings, has been able to balance the ledger.
