Leaving the Land of Goodbyes

Leaving the Land of Goodbyes

A Poem by Elowyn W.

Why must we say Goodbyes?
And why are they called “good”?
Goodbyes bring tears and bittersweet smiles
Last hugs and final glances
There is little good in a goodbye
Why is this the last word we share with departing friends?
I’m weary of goodbyes
Tired of letting people go

It used to be easy to say goodbye
As a child I’d smile and wave, “bye-bye”
Believing it to be another game
That the person I loved would always be behind me
Times have changed and so have my goodbyes
Now I say goodbye with a touch of sadness
Knowing that I and the person will have changed ere we meet again
If we meet again at all
I wish for a world of no more goodbyes
Where nothing can separate friends
Where we can always be together
In the Land of Hellos.
