Stand Up

You know when you've had enough? When you need some motivation, a kick in the a*s. Read this and follow directions carefully. Rinse. Repeat.

When all the ghosts of battles lost

Rise up and cross your troubled soul,

Make your goal so well defined and

Convince your mind to never quit.

You stand right up, get off your a*s…

The blades of grass forgive the stomps;

Courage jumps to rise above

The price of love that’s held so dear.

When the cost is overrun by

Blazing sun that blocks all fun…

 

Stand up and fight,

Don’t ever back down,

Just plant your feet and heart

Deep in the ground…

Stand up and fight,

Protect your pride,

Just always make sure that

You’re on the right side…

Stand up and fight.

 

When you total up what’s found, and

The smoke still rises from the battleground

You must convince yourself what’s right

Is what prevailed in the bloody fight.

You say your prayers and you thank the Lord

For all the courage he had given, you have stored…

Stand up and fight.

Wow, it seems like months and months ago I wrote this. This was a good day I guess, I wasn't feeling down but defiant, re-reading it actually makes ME feel better today. BTW, my wife has been out of the hospital for a week or so; she has a broken shoulder but SHE is ready to stand up and fight! My mind works strangely. I have an encyclopedic knowledge of obscure facts, like songs and their lyrics. When I look back at times in my life there is always an accompanying soundtrack guiding it. That's why I started incorporating music with my poetry. Some people have said I should stop but I just really don't want to so I won't. Reminds me of the attitude in Tom Petty's song, "I won't back down." So inspirational and filled with emotional strength. We all have the courage within us if we believe we do. I liked this poem. Lydi**

'The blades of grass forgive the stomps'
I really like that metaphor and I do think it's very relevant to the point you are pushing in this passionate piece. We could lie flat and trodden down and accept the unexpected miseries life throws, or you could 'Convince yourself what's right'. That line also reminds me that we are all fundamentally constructs of nature, and although nature is harsh and cruel at times, it is also resilient, and insistent through any hardship, never ceasing to grow and push life through desolation.
Sometimes it is not a physical fight we must stand up to but the fight for piece of mind, for hope, for overcoming and striving forwards. This poem is surging with that mental and of course also physical effort.

Lily, I in no way meant this as a physical encounter (I'm way too old for that pointless machismo) but the mental barriers that keep us held motionless while turmoil swirls around us. The easy thing to do is sit back and take whatever life throws you with not a bang, but a whimper. It's much harder to look Life in the eye and say, "Good point. Now here's the RIGHT point!" After I wrote this I framed it and hanged it on the wall above my desk. I have bipolar disorder and struggle frequently; this may be the battle cry I need to emulate when the s**t hits proverbial fan. Thank you so much for your very insightful review. take care...dan

It's a very good poem with a good moral. Everyone needs motivation and a reason to keep going. The only thing I would change is the profanity. Vulgar language seems to be an uncreative way to try and portray emotion. Overall though, a very good piece of writing.

Dan I very inspirational piece and so true about get up and keep going. We all get knocked down its how we handle ourselves when we do. Do we stay down and waste away or get up and continue with life. Again you show through your words a strength you have. I good. Piece you have written here Dan.

Robert, I am not so strong, I need help often. Right now my wife is in the ICU at local hospital, breathing and coughing issues, not enough oxygen in her blood that needs to be routed through the body; especially her brain, she is not thinking coherently.
