He's baaaaaaaccccckkkk....at least that's what I keep telling myself. A shameful Re-post of a non-Classic. Please don't swear at me.

Stealthy ‘pon the Witching Hour

Towers all misgiven hatred,

Braced by cold wind’s demonic howling

Scowling as is such His nature;

Spewing horror, spit from his lair

Sulfuric air his grisly fanfare,

Specter grins in image sardonic,

A tonic for all the good to perish.

 

He cackles, surveying his dominion,

Recalls the new and those he vanquished;

Anguish always his stock in trade,

He made this world from his horrid image.

Watch him sneer with violent purpose,

Surfacing in his ghastly triumph;

He jumps toward those couched in courage,

His scourge devouring such brave mortals.

 

               Watch the Specter drum the cadence

               See him howl his hoary pleasure.

               Watch the Specter direct the digging

               Watch them die,

               Each splatter measured.

Hehehehe, now I jus had that moment of clarity... *smiles* I know, I've seen the title somewhere before... And now, I remembered. . Hahahahaha. Eight months ago, I've read this, and left a pitiful note, saying full rating, and that I love the included song (and I do.)
What I'd add... This reminds me of my nightmares... Well some of it actually.. I've got the hair standing on my head reaction... Which means, your poem jus scored full on drawing in readers, and also on the feel of it. Nice work.

I've got another dark one I would have submitted to the contest if I could have, called "bitter boy blue;" it's about the demons affecting a young boy who ends up jumping to his death. Very dark, a very unusual rhyme scheme. But I like the one I submitted too. Thanks for your kind words, I appreciate it. take care...dan

Brilliant as the first one, there were few times after finishing lines I was singing Enter Sandman and was singing 'Yeahhhh' like Hetfield.

I usually let my mood dictate the feel of my work as it hits the page. Writing darkly while feeling crappy is sometimes quite cathartic. Thank you for the read/review. take care...dan

lynn, I actually write the piece first then try to think of a song to accompany it, I don't write poems based on the songs. I'm also not much familiar with Tool, only remember a few of their songs. The Specter loves a martyr, thriving on their innocence... and perhaps it is our own shortcomings as human beings that has created the Specter, and he is just a reflection of our hatred and abusively selfish natures... if you take all the inhuman activities being carried out in our world today it is easy to see how one could imagine such a creature... this is hauntingly dark, Dan, but I believe it is born out of something real... well-done, my friend... I look forward to Specter III - coming soon to a cafe near you!!!

FT, You are right; I originally did not conceive the Specter as a finite entity but rather a feeling, a foreboding presence. A compilation of all the ills of today's world? That's a wonderful way to interpret that.
