strong or torn?

at times love can put up such strong barriers, is it really love? can the barriers be torn down?

a climb toward what may be love

can be stopped by

barriers,

walls of doubt.

without a bludgeon, cudgel or axe

these meager whacks

just sap our strength,

the lengthy wait resumed.

 

the weight of our resolve

can solve the riddles of the walls,

the calls of love, the distant tones

recall such bones of barriers

rocked, forever locked

in combat with our will,

instilled in us by time.

 

the might of love can weaken

all such barriers with steely

thought, to be brought down

in the morn,

each impediment crushed or

torn.

Isn't it love that breaks down the resistance, that gives us the doggedness to carry on? I know it takes a lot of perseverance, but it's the wind under our wings that carries us!

Kelly, You are right, that's really the only message I was trying to send with this piece. A couple of my previous writes were pretty abstract, I just wanted to write a straightforward poem with subject matter pretty much everyone could relate to. Thank you for YOUR kind words. take care...dan

I just have to say, I really really really love the line "recall such bones of barriers". I wish I had been the one to write that, haha.

Breaking down barriers with love is a tricky thing. Even in different forms of love, not just romantic. A friend of mine that I've known for years said it took her over 3 years to get me to "break down" my walls and be open with her. I was a very reserved and untrusting person. But eventually, with enough love, those "barriers" came down.

I completely agree with what you've written.

Luna, I believe that it's a part of the human condition to build walls to impede feelings of which we are not yet sure we desire. Like your example, if love truly exists then time will erode these impediments so that true feelings can be unfurled. Thanks so much for your insightful review. take care...dan

Barriers are inevitable because we are constantly dealing with the barrage of human emotions that no mere mortal can fully understand. I love your question here, dan and I say yes, love can conquer those barriers... all we need is time, patience and will, as long as the same is happening on the other side of those walls. Love the natural flow of assonance and alliteration in this write, dan. Well-done!
