strong or torn?

at times love can put up such strong barriers, is it really love? can the barriers be torn down?

a climb toward what may be love

can be stopped by

barriers,

walls of doubt.

without a bludgeon, cudgel or axe

these meager whacks

just sap our strength,

the lengthy wait resumed.

 

the weight of our resolve

can solve the riddles of the walls,

the calls of love, the distant tones

recall such bones of barriers

rocked, forever locked

in combat with our will,

instilled in us by time.

 

the might of love can weaken

all such barriers with steely

thought, to be brought down

in the morn,

each impediment crushed or

torn.

When reading this line i thought the wait of our resolve then i saw the word weight
Beautiful line there
Plays both ways

And that is pretty special i think

I liked this a lot. I've been there before, too and it's not fun. What makes it better for me is that I've always loved the song Torn and it fits so well with your poem. I was singing and bobbing my head along with the music while reading through the poem. It was a wonderful experience for me. The message in your work is so true to everyone. River, For me this was about someone being burned by love once; in his/her future, they erect barriers against love, walls put up as protection against that kind of hurt. But time has a way of eroding those walls, washing away the impediments to falling in love again. I'm so happy that you liked this poem; I sort of had your situation (as you have told me) in mind, as I think that maybe your boyfriend/potential fiancée is still chipping away at his own walls and barriers. Dan, I cannot agree with you more. It is true, love can really destroy barriers and walls and solve riddles. Only love can do that. Only love has the power to make as well as break. Glad to see an optimistic poem from you side. (I shouldn't be really saying that cause all of mine sound depressed, but still :P)

Annie, Believe it or not I do write lighter things, such as love poems. I am about to repost one that I posted shortly after I came to WC. It's about my very best friend, who (years ago) passed away at the age of 29, it's called Marty (Then and Gone). I will be sending you an RR. And I'm happy to receive your input on "strong or torn?" Anyone who has had love go wrong has to recall the courage it took to be willing to take a chance on being hurt again by getting back into a loving relationship. Todd, Thank you for the kind words. Those folks who have been previously burned by love tend to erect barriers to prevent another flush of pain. As the new love becomes more believable, and through time, the walls erode and love comes barreling through. Thank you for the great read/review. take care...dan

Steely Dan, steely writing.
I was minded of the adage 'Faint heart never won fair lady' as I traversed this poem - and yet I came to the conclusion (purely personal) sadly there must be a time when the effort is too much (for both) and that's when the adage falls down while the walls remain standing. Thats the 'torn' time then I guess.
This resonated deeply with me this afternoon Dan.
