Someone, will you catch my dreams

 before they hit the floor?

 To be ripped apart by carnivores,

 and devoured by their schemes

 

Ensnared by the web that snatched the catch

we’ll keep it bouncing free in space.

But when it’s gone there’ll be no trace,

so the start and the finish can’t match.

 

Incensed by life's absurdities,

caution draped in silken threads.

My hopes and dreams are at low ebb,

engaged by my frail sanity.

 

When dreams are caught they may object

to the treatment they have received.

But how are dreams to be believed

if reality is what they protect?

Jacob, My whole idea for this write centered on my belief that dreams, such a fertile field for poetic inspiration, are not always butterflies and marigolds. That often times dreams, especially daydreams, traverse some unpleasant terrain. And I'm not really thinking of blatant nightmares, just those half-and-half dreams that are kind of nice but also kind of disturbing. Those are the ones that are caught before they hit the ground; and then the dreamer has nowhere to go, only doubts remain. Thank you for your kind words. Todd, I'm glad you put that movie reference at the bottom, I thought you may have been having a psychotic break. :) For me to explain how to embed a video takes a while, it's complicated. But I did it for someone else here on WC, I typed up an entire document to explain step by step. It would be easiest if I had your personal e-mail addy I could send an e-mail with attachment to explain. If you don't want to do that message me that you don't and I'll try to think of another way. take care...dan

it's okay... I am torn really, I love it and then again I don't... I love hearing the music upon opening the page and reading, but then get frustrated when it plays every time I post, or revisit... I know how to embed the videos and I think that I will stick with allowing the viewer to choose whether they want to listen or not... I do think that it is a powerful tool though, especially for certain pieces. :)

Whereas originally dream-catchers were meant to protect us from nightmares and only allow pleasant dreams to go through, I see here dream-catchers as negative forces that devour people's delightful dreams (and daydreams as well). It is an interesting turn of events.

Those are very potent and philosophical lines. They really leave the reader agape a little and pondering. Don't we usually protect our dreams from harsh reality? But here, the roles have been reversed. The whole concept has been reversed!

Nadia, my thoughts while writing this was to disabuse the idea of dreams being this magical fix-it for the night in the dark. My idea was that whoever is 'catching' our dreams may not have our happiness in mind, maybe something a bit more nefarious. Thanks once again for your insightful review. take care...dan

Thank you lynn. And I think I told you a few days ago that I like your style also and wish you would write more. There are so many poems and songs that are about dreams and dreaming, it's almost a cliché to write about them. So I did just that. Take THAT, cliché! take care...dan

A good question you've left us with, dan? How can we believe in the very things that we employ to protect the realities of our lives. Still, we tend to look for someone to catch them for us and to help us protect them from being shattered. A nice write, sir!

FT, Do you know how often the word dreams(s) is invoked in poetry and popular music? I don't either, but I know that it is a large number. Such a fertile breeding ground for poetic ideas; I like your interpretation of the piece and thank you for expressing it. take care...dan
