a camellia grows

spring may have finally arrived...do you wanna bet?

up through a crack in the suntanned cement

a white flower sprouts,

its petals are bent.

attracting a hummingbird, stopping to sip…

but not one robin to announce

and identify the

dawning of spring

blooming late.

Winter always seems to last too long, doesn't it? Even when it is mild, as it was here. Yesterday I awoke to snow, but by the time I left work it had all gone away.

Hummingbirds are great announcers for spring. And bees.

I love the little white flower pushing through a crack of a suntanned sidewalk.

I fondly remember those springs...you just knew when you saw a robin! We used to have a nest in our trellis by our back porch, and the eggs are such a beautiful hue of blue!

I enjoyed the attention of the hummingbird, too...here's hoping your melancholy will soon dissipate to higher temps!

Yes, the slightly-satirical author's note was deliberate, just a brief chuckler. Here in the northeastern US the robins coming back north is the figurative sign that spring is here. And yes, the temp last night was in the low 20's so I fully expect more snow in this winter from hell. Thank you for your great review. take care...dan

Yes, I live in western PA and I fully expect we'll be getting more snow in this winter from hell. I saw a few robins a few days ago, but last night it went down to the low 20s...the robins were probably wishing they had stayed down south longer. I live in Central Michigan (not the Peninsula) so I know how you feel. We were able to enjoy about three days of spring weather and now it's snowing again today. Take care!
