Night Passage
Swishing skirts
and Big Band Jazz
skirling through
the smoke-filed air
like machine-gun fire:
rat-a-tat-tat and
beating drums
soaking into the pores
like fine wine
or casked whiskey,
bathtub gin in a
Speak Easy listening...
Pounding in the blood
like passion.
Train whistles in the night
as the music moves on
and leaves you breathless
on the shore of forever.
Jazz soothes the soul
and rocks the cradle.
Flying to the heights
beyond the moon
and plunging into the sea
of night...
forever smoky silence after.
I love the 1920's and 1930's flavor this poem has. It is such a beautiful narration that sums up the 1920's and 1930's. There are so many vivid images that are wonderful. When reading this piece, it was like I was watching a movie, a documentary, if you will, in that I got flashing movements in pictures.
