The Lady in the Boat -- John William Waterhouse

Shallot's Lament

Cast off the ropes

and let the river flow...

Wither it wanders

I care not to know.

He has left me to silence

in my white wedding gown,

so I'll float on the river

as the leaves trickle down...

In a boat with no oars,

my course set by fate --

the river flows onward,

I'll no longer wait.

And when I at last

find my boat run aground...

I shall sleep in the river...

alone shall I drown.

Wow - it's amazing. I love the story that you used for your poem - and I feel that your poem definitely lived up to the story's standard. It's just so good. I'm glad you kept the rhyming consistent. The imagery was great. Word choice was marvelous - it fit the time period quite nicely. Other than that, I have nothing else to say other than wonderful write.

WOOOOO!!! I LOVE THIS!!! I just happen to think of that poem today on my way home from work and was thinking about how I need to pay another visit to that piece.

Wow, I've always adored Tennyson's "The Lady of Shallot," and this is an excellent companion to it. It's both succinct and has good word choices, which in turn makes the poem wholly effective in making a profound impact. Also, the rhyme scheme assists with a smooth reading. In a way, it mimics a river, and it's just as sad as the original; it encapsulates the meaning of the old poem while engaging in a different, more contemporary style. The sympathy for the eponymous Lady of Shallott is so palpable. Amazing work!
