Let My Guard Down Willingly

Let My Guard Down Willingly

A Poem by Richard Lane

four hours after the new years party in Pikesville, MD in December 1987
let my guard down willingly
as we stood face to face in
the open doorway of the kibbutz style house of the Jewish Student Union
at Towson University from the
last few hours of 1987 into the new year of 1988
and it made no difference that I was 18 and you were 19,
and then as if Moses
had opened the flood gates
and for once had parted
the sea waters
i thought
would be stuck inside me
and i would never
fight my way
out of my anxiety
by hearing with
my ears
while following
i almost didn't believe
said "I love you"
until I felt your heart beating
in the same rhythm as my own heart
because I was feeling as if our hearts
were introducing themselves
and saying hello it's nice to meet your likeness on this cold new years eve.

It feels very personal, and I feel as if I am reading a poem from journal notes ... love the detail and the way you have captured the memory forever in words.
