The Dress Mess

The Dress Mess

A Poem by Mariah Lynn Thompson
"

Based on a true story

"
Let me tell you a story of a willful girl.
All she wanted was to change the world.

She ventured outside her home one day,
Intent on communion with nature and play.

But then she beheld a terrible sight:
Trash on the ground; it just wasn't right!

It covered the leaves that fell from the trees.
It glittered and blew noisily in the breeze.

She said to herself, "I know what I'll do,
I'll pick up a bit, just a little, a few."

Soon she said walked along the side of the street.
Strangers all staring but their eyes she would not meet.

One man shouted and give a cheery wave.
She waved back. It didn't take much to make her day.

But OUCH! She cut her finger on broken glass.
Seems no good came from brick-a-brack and trash.

She sighed and wiped her blood on the ground,
And continued the sacred work she had found.

Alas she made it back close to her home.
(And here comes the kicker in this poem.)

She came upon a tall, tall fence.
You could say today she was unbelievably dense.

She put her boots between the links and well,
She trembled and had a vision she fell.

But, "No, not today!" She cried to the wind,
Over the fence her legs managed to bend.

And with a grunt she sat on the top.
She moved to jump but something made her stop.

Her beautiful flowing dress was caught!
Oh, for this she was very distraught.

"Oh I'll be up here for days!" She cried,
But she wouldn't give up until she tried.

Se spent a good five minutes releasing her dress,
Laughing inside and thinking, "What a mess!"

She realized soon part of her dress was STUCK!
And that's when she knew she was quite out of luck.

So she ripped her dress and tumbled to earth.
All this she found funny, this girl full of mirth.

She ran home at once to tell Mama of the fence.
At the sight of her dress, her mama did wince.

But deft of finger and hard of head,
She fixed up her dress with needle and thread.

And with this story, I must stress,
Do Not, DO NOT, climb a fence in a dress.

Wear clean knickers if you are going to climb the fences in a dress too.
This was a good giggle - well written verse.
