Years In Wait

Years In Wait

A Poem by Aehr

Those oceanic orbs stared into her emerald ones

A look that sent a happy rush down her spine

But not a hint of a smile could be seen on his hard face

And still that look alone to her was nothing less than divine

‘You know I cannot stay,’ he said before looking away

Her face fell and terror paralyzed her form

The summer’s breeze seemed to be much colder

And the winter’s snowflake seemed much too warm

“Why must it be like this?” she cried out loud

And he turned back to her fair and fragile face

Her tears, what looked like melted crystal to him

Were now falling down her cheeks at a fast pace

“I’m twenty five and you are sixteen,” was his simple reply

And it was reason enough for him to leave her, she knew

“What do they have to do with our love?” she questioned

She questioned everything, just out of the blue

All he did was chuckle a bitter laugh, and pull her close

“You know you’ll be the one I love, always and forever”

The words he said were lucid and true, her heart knew

That he, the man she loved, would lie to her never

“If only your years could wait for me,” she cried before they kissed

And she tasted his lips and the feel lingered there for then

“You know they always will,” he replied as a tear fell from his eye

“The right time will come,” he said getting up, “And I’ll meet you when”

I love that, "would lie to her never." The reverse of words made the poem more interesting and intriguing. Also, I really enjoyed the hints of dialogue and your poetic elements

I loved the narrative in this - poems that tell stories draw me in deeply... and I wanted to know more. Fine work, Rhea. Keep it up!

thank you so much Landred :)
nine years at this age is a huge distance but when you're 48 and 57 - its nothing. Just a blink. A resonant poetic story and glad to see the block lift.
