Stardust

Stardust

A Story by Aehr

When I was young, I had always wondered what the stars existed for. It had always been this huge mystery for me, which I couldn’t unravel, no matter how hard I tried. Wherever I checked, whomsoever I asked, told me what stars were and how they were formed. But nobody told me the reason for their existence.

One fine December day, I went to my dad and said “Dad, I want a tube-thingy”

My Dad has lost his job back then, and my family was going through some financial problems. It was frustrating for him, but he was trying his best to find a new job, and a better one too. His old boss (who chucked him out) was worse than any other. He treated Dad like a servant.

Dad laughed “What is this ‘tube-thingy' you are talking about?”

“The seeing-eye tube thingy that Danny has. He says he uses it to see stars at night.” I replied seriously.

“Oh, that’s called a telescope.”

“Yea, the seeing-eye tube-thingy”

Dad rolled his eyes, sighed, and said “Yea, we have one in the attic. I’ll take it out for you tomorrow, and then you can see the stars.”

“No! I want to see them tonight!”

Another sigh. “Fine, I’ll take it out now.”

“Will you see the stars with me, Daddy?”

Dad shook his head. “I can’t honey. I’ve got some work to do.”

Now was the time to use my secret weapon " one which little girls always kept in handy: the puppy dog face.

Apparently, it worked out. Dad took out the telescope, (a.k.a. the seeing-eye tube-thingy) and set it out in the balcony. It was a cold, December night, and we were bundled up in oversized, warm sweaters. Dad got a stool out, and I sat on it enthusiastically. I couldn’t wait to see the stars.

Finally, Dad told from where to look through and I beheld the most amazing sight ever. I could see the whole universe. A million sparkling diamonds scattered on a sheet of pitch black. It was beautiful, just simply amazing. I couldn’t blink " I didn’t want to blink. I didn’t want to miss even a fraction of a second of this beauty.

“It’s amazing” I said to my Dad, completely in awe.

“It is, isn’t it?” he said

I decided to take this chance to ask for an answer to my question “Dad, why did God make stars?”

But he didn’t reply. Instead he pointed at the sky, and told me to look through the telescope. I did as he told, and what I saw, was more than amazing. I was looking at a shooting star, one of the most beautiful ever. It was like a brilliant ray of light darting across the sky. I could still see a tiny shimmer on the path which it had crossed " it was stardust.

Stardust fell from the back of the shooting star as it moved across the night sky like a gentle sprinkle of magic, and all it did was taking my breath away. And that was when I got my answer. That was when I understood why God had made stars.

Do you know why?

God made stars to remind people that they should always take out a few minutes from their lives to look at the good things in life. They should realize the beauty of nature and just enjoy it for a while. And most of all, God made stars to keep up the hope of people, no matter what obstacle comes in their path. Even though Dad was tired and frustrated from within, that tiny shooting star made him feel better. That was what stars were for.

As the shooting star streaked across the sky, looking as if it was sprinkling stardust all over the land, I smiled and hugged my Dad. I had got my answer, and I was now content.
