Can't Steal the Past

Can't Steal the Past

A Poem by G?

I can’t take away the past

Like a thief who steals thoughts

Memories are like an ocean

Whose surging waves

Crash upon my mind

And recede

Leaving only traces

My dreams are filled

With the remnants of my life

The tide has left me with this

Stolen thoughts

In my mind’s eye

The gull flashes by

Soaring on Heaven’s breath

My isolation is so complete

My memories and imagination are my only friends

Three instantiations of us keep me here

Without them

I would just be a memory

I hear your distant voice

Reaching for you with my soul

You vanish with the wind

The same breath that lifts the gull’s wings

Another wave crashes

I want to hide from the thought of it

There is no escape

Such a beautifully depressive piece. (I mean this in a good way, I assure you) It really expresses, to me, how memories just seem to come and go. Some of them are good and some are bad but they all leave various fragments that plague us. The flow of your work is great and really shows how good of a writer you are. Please keep up the good work.
