A Country State of Mind

A Country State of Mind

A Poem by Robert Filos

A Country State of Mind

whistling through dandelions
eastbound waves of wind

arching along the obstruction
posed by an old weathered barn

rises and dives across clothesline
filed with white picket signs

of the country variation crisp
front porch shade cradles pups

granddad's violin playing heard within
creaking trees sway lifetime of sailing

only the strongest branches withstand
a stakes race against the greatest

root cellar dweller hidden among us
anger and awe reside here together

yet peaceful they are, and always kind
that thing called, a country state of mind
