Harlan

A Poem by Robert Filos

"
dig deep
cause that's where
you find
the blackest nuggets
the darkest secrets
men and women hide

out of these pits
come a very precious commodity
currency of the accuser
coinage of the abuser
notes of the loser

ourselves scarred and scattered
we mine and we sell
that which will be our master
lungs impaired and inoperable

offending brother and sister
beyond earthly repair
consuming without care

strip mining comes along and
the whole mountain of a soul
can be offended sans control

no one ever leaves
but everyone will cry

the devil destroyed
but the SAVIOR makes live
