The  Lone Survivor

The Lone Survivor

A Poem by Reyvrex Questor Reyes
"

Running from false glory.

"
The sound of bugles dins louder at last,
The cavalry must be approaching near,
Thank God that here, no more do cannons blast,
When seen from yonder banks as smoke would clear;
And not a stir from all the dead around,
My friends and foes, that lay all splayed and still,
Had I not fled this fateful battleground,
My guts would also scatter on the fill;
But then, to have glory where others died,
This flag would be defiled held by my hand,
False History might have me glorified,
As lone surviving hero of my band;
......Before greatness would soon to me extend,
......I have to leave, deserter till the end.

Coming from a military academy, which I still attend. This work strikes home with me. It reminds me of a picture we have hanging on a wall here. It depicts a man holding his hand up to the Vietnam Wall. The man is crying. On the other side reflecting from the names on the wall are all those who died. You can assume he knew them. But maybe he did not and abandoned them and that is why he cries. Thank you for the beautiful writing and the new perspective.

Old war and new wars are the same. Few hero's walk away from the ancient battlefield. Today war is more polite. It is the same. Death. I like the lines above. A deserter to the end and no home to return to. Thank you for sharing the excellent poetry.
