The lights of temptation

The lights of temptation

A Poem by Stephen Anderson
"

Just a little prose i penned while bored at work and oddly thinking of the vending machine

"

Towering over me your lights glinting off the delicate wrappers full of sweetness and endorphins. Its coffee time at work and i have a hankering for something more today, some sweet temptation thats been calling to me everytime i head to the water cooler.

shes dressed smartly in purple with a subtle twist of yellow, and shes been begging me, calling to me all morning. I cant take it any more.

The jingle of the coins i suddenly find in my pocket. Do i have enough? sifting through the change, bits of fluff and my memory stick i gently select the coins.

Looking up with a glint in my eye a bead of condensation obscures my view of the prize for just a second, then shes back in sight.

the coins slide through the slot offering little resistance, tinkling with laughter as they join there friends, free from the darkness and solitude of my pocket.

"MAKE YOUR SELECTION" the machine insists. I smile "My selection? i chose a few moments of sugar induced freedom from the quiet hum of the aircon unit in the office and the sound of whispered conversations under the watchers eyes.

I press the buttons the beeps reminding me of BUGS or some other spy show, where the hero has 3 seconds to diffuse a bomb, thats gonna kill hundreds.

KLUNK

My prize is in sight, as i sweep her into my hands. And wander back to my desk, peeling her outer layer off gently. I look at the prize, chocolate brown stares longingly at me from the scattered layer of packaging.

A hand swoops in and grabs a piece, "OI!, theres always one" i pop a piece of chocolate into my mouth a smile tugging at my lips.

Ah life is good
