Happily Ever After

Happily Ever After

A Story by Penny Ellen
"

Just a thought.

"

The look in her eyes froze me. She no longer looked haunted as she had most of the billions of times I’d seen her before. Before, her eyes told of struggles too daunting for even the strongest of men. Many ended in a one-sided sort of victory, leaving her torn between a sense of failure toward her intentions, even if the results were the same. I felt bad for her. Pity-filled.

The nights I’d seen her cry, felt her tears on my shirt sleeves, soaking eagerly through fabric to reach skin, and therefore, safety. I’d seen her drunk, eyes wide and dilated, fingers shaky, hair disheveled, pale and insecure. Much different than the warm and cozy act she put on in front of others, laughing when she felt like crying. Tired. Ready to fall into that eternal sleep.

She looked alive, now. Lip bitten, cheeks blushing, skin a powdery white, rather than a strained one, eyes calmly burning with a satisfaction greater than any of the loves that had betrayed her. Something had happened. Something beautiful. And it wasn’t going to end. She broke into the most genuine smile possible, calm rolling off her in waves, contentment glowing within her. For once, she was completely truthful in her happiness. Exhilarated. Not just hopeful or optimistic, but fulfilled. And I knew. I knew, even as I turned from the bathroom mirror and walked back into the bedroom that everything would be okay.
