Crimson rolled her eyes as Skull swooned over the cute guy three tables down from us in the courtyard. Dustin was his name. Dustin Gyllenhall. Skull had noticed him now because he was growing his hair out, which made him look, as she said, “cuter by the day”. Gag.
“Go talk to him if you like him so much.” I dared her.
She blushed.
Crimson raised her eyebrows as Sean Lesley walked by “Now he’s cute.” She said, nodding to Skull. Sean was tall and slightly chubby on top of being buff. His curly brown hair and green eyes made a lovely, mesmerizing sort of combination. Crimson had been friends with Sean for a while, and probably had a crush on him since day one.
Skull leveled with her. “I’ll talk to Dustin if you talk to Sean.”
No one moved for a long moment.
“Hell, I’ll talk to both of ‘em if you won’t” Bunny said, winking and smiling.
I giggled. The girls glared.
“Fine.” Crimson stood up and sauntered over to Sean. From the way his face lit up, I take it she’d said something funny. I’d get details later, probably.
Skull pulled her mouth into a lopsided smile with her finger. “Dustin has a girlfriend.” She whined.
Bunny replied “Don’t remind him of it.”
“You’re terrible” I remarked after Skull had begrudgingly kept her side of the deal.
“I know.” He said.
Two days later, Sean sat with us at lunch. He seemed smitten enough with out resident whinybutt, but what do I know about boys? Most of my friends are girls and gay guys. The next Monday, Dustin and his girlfriend Liz joined us. Skull had worked her magic on Liz, a blonde soccer player with freckles and a snow white smile. Liz was cute, but annoyingly perky. Dustin was quiet while she was there, which halted any progress with Skull.
With prom inching ever closer, Crimson decided to make her move. Tuesday night, I sat in her room with her. “What should I say?” She was trying on her prom dress for the billionth time, probably. Girls like to make sure everything fits just perfect.
I shrugged. “I was wondering if you’d like to go to prom with me?”
“That’s so forward!” she cried in agony.
I snickered. “I don’t think guys go for subtlety. Just be sure he’s in a good mood.”
She had finished wriggling into her prom dress. “Zip me?”
I leapt from her bed and obeyed, but the zipper got tight two thirds of the way up. “Hold your b***s in.” I commanded.
She did, and the zipper slid all the way up. She tugged at the part of the dress over her hips. “I need to diet.”
“No.” I circled her. “You wouldn’t look as stunning if you did.”
She giggled. “You’re crazy.”
“Sweetie, your thighs look perfect, and this fits your hips just right.” She’d chosen a red dress that stayed fitted until just past the hips, and then fell into a straight skirt with a slit on the side. With her fiery hair, it looked stunning. “Quit sucking your tummy in.”
She breathed. “Fine. It’s okay, though?”
“Perfect.” I assured her. “If he says no, you’ll make him regret it.”
He said yes. Actually, he’d asked her out on a date, and she’d said yes. They went to dinner and a movie, which is when she’d proposed the prom idea. Crimson had a boyfriend at last. Unfortunately, so did Bunny, which meant that I’d show up at prom alone.
Bunny hadn’t even noticed the cute long-haired sophomore who threw a smile at him every now and then, but boy, that cutie noticed him. George was smaller than Skull, and shyer than any of us. He came up to me one day during lunch.
“Hey, you’re Blair, right?”
We’d had study hall together in the fall. “Yeah, you’re George?”
“Yep. I’ve got a question. Well, a couple, actually.”
“Shoot.”
“You’re best friends with Kenneth?”
I processed that for a moment. “Oh, Bunny, yeah.”
He pulled at a lock of the black hair that was splayed over his shoulder. “Well, um, I kinda like him, and I was wondering if you could, ya know, introduce us or something.”
My eyes practically popped out of my head. “Um, sure. He should be out of class any minute if you wanna stay for lunch.” I smiled as warmly as possible, suppressing a girly squeal that I would release later. This kid was adorable, and I’m pretty sure Bunny would think so too. We had similar taste in guys.
Skull and Bunny exited the doorway of the building they’d been in and walked toward the table. George noticed, and got really tense.
“Relax.” I told him.
“Who’s this?” Skull said as she slid next to me on the bench.
“George.” He said bravely. I noticed he was wearing eyeliner.
Bunny smiled as he slid in next to George. “Nice to meetcha. I’m Bunny, and this is Skull. You look really familiar.”
“We had Chem last year.”
Bunny’s eyes ignited with understanding “Oh God, you’re right. Am I ever glad that class is over.”
“I know. Meyers made it torture.”
And in a couple days, they were, as the British would say, snogging. Bunny was happier than ever and I was alone again, left to the chaos in side my head.
