Don't Stop Me NowA Chapter by Penny EllenListening to Queen while writing does have its drawbacks...
My adrenaline rushed through me like an ocean of power. This was insane, and I knew it. My body was hot inside the layers of clothes. The snow on the ground and falling from the sky did nothing to cool me down. His tracks were easy to read. He’d run when I pulled out the bat; he and all his friends. They hadn’t been expecting a fight, and certainly not from a harmless little girl on a park bench. I grinned as I rounded a corner in the path behind the cinderblock bathrooms.
His voice revolved in my head. “Hey lady. Yeah, b***h I’m talkin a you. Hey, you wanna-look at me when I’m talkin! You wanna help me out? Ya got cash?” He caught my arm, and his three friends scrambled around me in a circle.
I’d reached with my other arm to the sweatshirt pocket where I kept a knife; my backup weapon. I felt something cold and hard against my scarf. I shifted my eyes to see that I was being held at knifepoint. How ironic.
I grasped the handle of my knife and jerked away, lashing out at the knife holder. “Only one?” I pulled mine out and grabbed the bat from behind me with the other hand, holding it vertically and upside down. My blood ran cold. I grinned unnaturally and slipped the knife back to my pocket, grasped the bat with both hands, and swung. It had taken me a week of sitting on this bench after work for this chance. I was not about to screw it up. I hit one, and he went down, but it wasn’t the guy who’d talked at me. My eyes were for him, now. He was my new target.
I found myself at a fence moments later. Beyond it was a ravine. I jumped it, even in the awkward boots. The footsteps grew closer together, which meant that he’d slowed down.
I cornered him. He’d run behind a dumpster, and his prints ended there. I could hear his breath rip at the air desperately. “B***h is crazy.” He muttered.
“Maybe you’re right.” I answered after creeping around the edge.
His eyes filled with terror. “Please don’t hurt me lady.”
“Oh, this won’t hurt.” I smiled again, raising the bat. “Much.”
After he was taken care of, I trashed the blonde wig and the rest of my costume. I looked at the bat, wishing I could keep it as a memento. I knew, though, that I couldn’t risk it. I headed back home via bus. The driver looked and smiled at me like only a lonely man can, and then turned to his business.
My stop was many minutes away, but I finally reached it.
Home was empty. My parents had gone out, and my brother had a date. I switched on music in the bathroom and sang along with Freddie Mercury in the shower. “Tonight I'm gonna have myself a real good time, I feel alive... and the world turning inside out Yeah! And floating around in ecstasy, So don't stop me now, don't stop me, Cos' I'm having a good time having a good time…” © 2008 Penny Ellen |
