How To Open Our Eyes

How To Open Our Eyes

A Poem by Mariah

surrounded by people

but alone nonetheless

they don't know what's going on inside

a relief, i confess

they might hear me speak

they might see me smile

i can fake it for a moment

i can pretend for a while

but inside i'm crying

inside i'm shouting

inside i'm vengeful

inside i am cowering

of course, they don't know that

all they know is the periphery

not unwilling to look deeper-

just conditioned not to see

but its no mistake

i think god was right

when he made us learn on our own

how to open our eyes.
