Hotel
by Regina K. Pride

We come here only to clear our minds
while the world crashes
and burns outside-
tabula rasa.

We come here only because we want to
not because we have to.

We come here only because
something’s not right.

I’m too young to know what really goes on in
an adult’s reality.

I like to play with dolls,
dressing them up like mothers and fathers.
Make them talk the way I imagine
mothers and fathers talk to each other,
but I don’t know.

I don’t want to know
after a night of covering my ears
under my bed sheets.
I don’t want to know what silence means
by the way they don’t make eye contact.

But it’s clear to see what it all really means.

Mother stands in front of the door.
Father stands on the other side of the world.
I am between them
making a decision,
a decision no child should ever make.
It’s not fair.
I want them both.

Mother says,
“you’re coming with me,”
and we leave.

I do not understand.

Mother says,
“we come here because we want to
not because we have to.”

But I have yet to decide where I stand.

Mother says,
“it’s all for the better,”
but I have yet to find what befits me and what does not.

It’s not fair.

This tells so poignantly that collateral damage is not limited to war. It is always the innocent that suffer the most.

Beccy.
