what poetry/writing means to me

when i close my eyes

when i close my eyes
i see words
a map of i's and t's
q's and u's
an entire alphabet
strung together on simple string
the body electric
the mind its trigger
sensations turn to emotions
colors and their numerology
telling time with stars
everything with its own meaning
& personal beauty

when i close my eyes
the words form lines in mid air
between breaths
and every breath i take
someone asks me why
why do you write
a complex question that always gets
a simple answer
the meaning of life
is behind every line
all things being illuminated
all at once
there's a focus and a mission
beyond getting from point a to point b
an entire existence in the pages
between leather paper or hardback book covers

when i close my eyes
i'm stronger than any weapon could ever be
stronger than the sticks
and their subsequent stones
stronger than the flames that could devour
any soul whole

when i close my eyes
the life i could never understand
suddenly makes sense
and although i could say
all of this with my voice
i choose to write
capturing the words i see floating around
drifting above our heads
making them history
keeping them for all
eternity

Author's Note

There's no punctuation or capitalization because it's supposed to be a stream of consciousness, kind of like how thoughts are spoken in a person's mind.
