Assuming no one miss the ants

Assuming no one miss the ants

A Poem by Regina K. Pride
"

I discovered a horde of ants in my room and in my box of crackers. I panicked and tried to kill them all. Then I reflected on my actions and the choices we make based off of societal structures.

"

Assuming no one miss the ants
by Regina K. Pride

Shush,
don’t tell sister how old she gets
by the way she asks us to hold her hand
on the pier.

We like to look out over the edge
while the crustacean swims shallow end below us
passing the rock bed;
he sinks into the tiny hole
never to be seen afterward
not even a pincher wave goodbye.

Sister won’t allow us to chase the others on the beach-
mighty hammered claws fight-
tells us: sit on the blanket,
act like we have sense.

But even the blanket gets our skirts wet
and we have to scuttle further into shore.

Time starts to taste a lot like salt water,
some of it stings our eyes.
Have to close them, sister says,
her shadow above us- a gull shadow in the air
watches our reactions.
We act the way the ant acts
surrounded by much larger things that can
control us,
spinning dizzy circles.
What’s up and what’s down?
Crawling on top of each other
making new discoveries with our bodies.

Control this:
fists in the sand disturb homes
and even cities underground,
create unrest for the ones below us;
smaller than us.
Sister says, stop that,
you’re making a mess out of your clothes.

Our hands are caught the culprits,
dripping clumps of muddy sand
like blood droplets,
but all else will be fine
assuming no one miss the ants.
