Sonnet XXXIX As
I walked the canyon’s valley, I heard
Spider Woman singing, weaving
the Mesa’s walls with colors,
rich hues that told the story
of Earth’s creation; the story
of the Hero Twins, Child Born
of Water, and Monster Slayer. woven
there were the Sun, Moon, and
Stars, all part of the Dine’ mythos
and the Navajo Way of Life. As
she wove and sang, you
approached, arms stretched wide,
embracing me with your songs and
mystery, with your life. Aztec
