Unchain

It was always fantasy,

this notion that

we are a nation ‘for good’.

There was Manifest Destiny,

called forth by the greed of white men,

and the slaughter of innocents,

who refused to be slaves.

From the beginning,

this myth of ‘equality’

and ‘Kingdom on the Hill’,

was a bold-faced lie,

but repeated in homilies,

that warped the minds

of even the best people.

“From the Halls of Montezuma,

to the shores of Tripoli”,

expanded since to Hiroshima, Hanoi

and Timbuktu,

American armies of conquest

have wreaked havoc

north and south,

east and west,

wreaked havoc, death, and destruction

on the world’s people,

in the name of ‘democracy’ and

‘free’ markets of the capitalist system,

can I get an amen.

It’s long since time to

unchain our minds

from these horrors;

unchain our hearts

from a ‘me first’ world;

unchain forever

from all these traditions and chains.

I could have not said it better. People should own their lies and mistakes and even countries, too. We are not immune sir Curt. We need to ask for forgiveness and humble ourselves before God and man. People tend to think that our history is perfect but it is not. As long as we correct them and go back to the original vision and letter of the constitution, we will be better off than other nations.
An excellent wake up call and poem

I remember Ray Charles' version of "Unchain My Heart" which (thru it's blues romp) intimated that infidelity, although assumed, was always one sided. Devotion Is always a fantastic hypothetic as related to our 'feelings' towards democracy. The poorer you are, the more evidence is required to demonstrate their gained credit for virtue. What I mean is, who cares about the migrant worker until you look down at your bowl of Honey Nut Cheerio's and wonder where those strawberries came from.? So "democracy" (little D) is that loaf of bread you open knowing full well that the end pieces aren't desired. Afghanistan has fallen to the Taliban; My Pop Tarts are ready.......great poem.....dana

Yes everyone focuses on the freedom we have but disregards the price many paid for it

I feel there are so many countries that don't want our interference, and are really better off with whatever governing they have, democracy does not work everywhere, and sometimes not even in our own country.
this speaks to me volumes....reminds me of a scene in Across the Universe where the recruits are carrying the Statue of Liberty across Viet Nam.
deep thoughts here....and much for me to agree with...

Amen, my friend. Now a portion of society seeks to eradicate all notions of an uncomfortable truth of these supposed "American" ideas which they falsely hold as virtues. They want to remove any semblance of our racist hateful past being taught in education for they go against our American values. As if we didn't hang people of color on trees, intern Japanese Americans, the trail of tears the true Americans suffered, place Hispanic children in cages, deny the right to vote to women and people of color, and enslaved human beings because of the color of their skin. This does not include the multitude of times we sought to interfere upon other nations in an effort to "civilize" them to our American values. These white evangelical southern Christians need to experience their own come to Jesus moment they try to force upon everyone else. Not all of them are racist war mongering hypocrites but there sure are quite a few that should trouble the heart of those who are not. For them to argue Critical Race Theory is a racist point of view is very telling on the kind of ignorance this country was founded upon. The kind that would rather believe the lies then the truth because it makes them look bad. That our society is built upon the ideas of systematic racism where a few benefits while the others are left to fight for scraps. Thank you for sharing the truth of these words.
