“Have You Ever Loved A Woman”

(Title of a song sung by Eric Clapton)

Soul mate,

what does this mean?

People say,

“there is someone just for you.”

I have my doubts,

especially now that I am

way too old for

“that someone special”.

But even when younger,

I wondered about this and

the meaning of a line in Springsteen’s

‘The River’ that goes:

“is a dream a lie

if it doesn’t come true;

or is it something worse?”

I think it’s something worse.

Isn’t that all a soul mate is,

a dream,

a hope for someone

to share life,

secrets,

and heart beats with.

A dream that explodes

the way Dandelion’s puffed wishes

dissipate in a strong wind;

travelling far and wide,

but never landing

on one that

owns a lonely heart.

This one is sad. I guess because I can see the truth in it.
Or what I believe to be true. I used to believe it was all possible but I don't anymore.
Disney ruined me I think :)

Wow! You are waxing philosophical as well as poetic. Food for thought. You bring up many good points. Enjoyed your analogy too sir. You are a thinker.

is "soul mate" a real thing...i do believe it...but I also believe that sometimes we just can't live with soul mates.
I believe my second ex and i are the closest i have come to that term...and even now we connect, though on a different level.
but i , too, now cease to look for another...and am quite content with my female friends and my independence....adapting at my age now? doesn't make sense.
this poem reflects so many of us...you hit the nail on the proverbial tail...oops, head...
