Turn the Page

(Against the Wind)

As I grew older,

I found myself

further from home,

looking find shelter

from raging storms,

and howling Winter winds.

I want to turn the page.

It seems like

I am still writing this poem.

Today,

the consequences

are upon us,

as poisonous weeds grow wildly

everywhere.

I want to turn the page.

Unlike Germany,

American fascism

comes wrapped in Christian fundamentalism

and the American flag,

with a businessman at its helm;

god, country, praise jesus

hallelujah, amen.

I want to turn the page.

This poem,

started before I was born,

has always been written

against the wind

and will continue

long after I am gone.

I want to turn the page.

Humanity’s hopes

lie upon the stage;

fires raging,

canons roaring,

while thunder and lightning

crackle throughout the night,

as always,

we fight against the wind.

I want to turn the page.

To those who came before,

we honor;

to those who come after,

we are judged.

I want to turn the page.

I have tried to write,

in metaphor, rhyme,

sometimes even in allegory,

the People’s story.

How er bravely fought

against the wind.

Do we really understand

to be rid of poisonous weeds,

we must dig out the roots?

Do we really comprehend,

to experience a rosy dawn,

we must make it through the night?

Do we really know that

to get to the eye,

we must go against the wind?

I want to turn the page.

This poem feels more like the desperation I feel at the way things don't improve & that page just won't turn. It's like the first poem presented things more coolly & with reason, whereas, in this poem, I feel the impatience for making something positive happen. The most brilliant line: "I am still writing this poem" . . . that is so brilliant, I'm very envious. It's such a succinct way to say it. And you, of all the poets I know, get to claim this poem, you write on it so often & so well! (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

A masterrpice, Curt. Not to worry though ... the wind carries us all along whether we are aware of it or not.

great song....this poem begs the question to me...are we running against a wind that we have created for ourselves...can we get out of our own way...
what we built in this country...fascist America...The Age of Aquarius stomped out by the heavy feet of materialism...commercialism...technology...
we are ruled by it....as Terrance Mann would say "like an army of steamrollers"---
