Playing in the Sand II

(We stood here in the beginning)

I.

Spring began to make an appearance,

sprinkling yellow flowers

and greening grass,

as a handful of crows

flew in a blue sky

dodging white puff clouds.

It was a serene early morning scene

witnessed while

sipping coffee on the back porch.

The circling crows

reminded me of you

and how they were

messengers from the ‘Old Ones’,

guardians of our Earth

and the 4 elements

of existence.

As the crows landed

on the trees down

by Willow Creek,

they turned,

stared in my direction

as if they had something to say,

but then rose and flew away.

In the silence that ensued,

the vision began.

Venus emerged from the dusk

and played with wispy, wishful clouds

as I walked along the beach

where I last saw you.

It was long ago

when I brought you here

so you could re-join your wolf family.

As I rounded the bend

and cleared the trees,

the moonlight caught 3 wolves

playing tag with the waves;

you were one of them,

your golden-brown fur

reflected moon beams softly.

II.

The moon was full,

bathing the beach with light,

allowing me to watch the 3 wolves

playing in the sand;

it reminded me

of what you told me once.

 Long ago,

wolves were plenty in the East,

raising family,

roaming sand and forest,

chasing rabbits, squirrels,

along with gulls and terns…”

As I sat watching,

you approached,

licked my face in greeting,

and laid down beside me.

As we stared

out over the ocean,

I heard your thoughts

speak to me:

“Aztec, you have the spirit gift,

I sense the wolf inside you;

join me,

run wild

and share the moon with me”.

III.

The circling crows

brought me back

to the porch,

coffee, now cold,

still in my hand, and

the sun, higher in the sky,

I knew what I had to do.

After facing the 4 directions,

seeking balance with the 4 elements

and giving thanks to Grandmother,

I headed out to join my mate,

howling at Istawicayazan Wi,

and thinking,

“Tokeya uniki najinjpi”,

“We stood here in the beginning.”
