Young Once

Young Once

A Poem by redzone
"

…. well, I was, once....

"

Young Once

It’s Friday night,

not looking for romance,

I just wanna dance,

swing you into new heights

and hold you close

when the music slows.

This jazz joint plays the blues

those songs written long ago

when I was young

and your red net legs

moved sensually

enticing me onto your dance floor

and melting me into the

words you would sing.

We were younger then

and the world was on fire

as was my heart aflame

with the sway of your hips

and the taste of your lips.

Those were the days of Jimi,

while Janis sang her soul

and Cream introduced

us to cocaine fantasies

as we soared with Lucy

on those diamond nights.

We were young then,

innocent, but pulsed

with the fires of the times.

It was here I lost you,

as your desire

crashed and burned,

leaving only ash and shadow

along with my smoldering heart.

Older now,

that smell of burning flesh

still follows me around.

Then one day, I met you.

But I want no romance,

only to hear this music,

and dance;

pulled into the words you sing.

My heart couldn’t beat,

if I saw your desires

crash and burn.

And yet, I wish I could have

known you

when I was younger.

I love your poem. It tells so many stories from my youth! Love references to musical heroes -- all the same for me, too! If only we didn't leap into things with wild abandon, leading to a crash-and-burn situation . . . and as your poem suggests, let's now take a more measured leap into the nostalgia of the past! Great depiction of craving that intensity, but knowing it's best not to go there (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

I love all the allusions. The bitter sweet of wanting what's gone and can be no more.

can't bring back those days, although your poem tried really hard to do that...and almost succeeded...

"i wanna dance with somebody" (Whitney)
just dance....cause the romance was back in the day and knows its place.

i love the musical group allusions here...
i felt this poem.
