Once on A Car Ride

we hit the road

with blue skies shinning

and the air crisp with autumn.

from the playlist

a rap song of ‘f’ words screaming,

not even the beat spoke

of consciousness,

reminding me how every artistic novelty

gets corrupted

by the drive for money.

reminding me how

the anger of the streets,

of the deep oppression

and killing of spirit

and each other

gets turned inward,

instead of anthems to resistance

and turned outward.

reminding me how our creativity

is twisted into

the art of self-mutilation,

drive bys

and the ethos of

‘get rich or die trying’.

we live with a revolting culture,

in a f’ed up society,

and in a world filled with horror and pain.

we need a social revolution.

thankfully

someone changed the music

and we returned to

blue skies and autumn colors.

it’s not just the aesthetics

of a multi-colored mountain-scape,

but the underlying possibilities

that can come forth

from red leaves

blowing down inner city streets,

each one scattering seeds of future people

creating the art and colors

to disturb the universe

in hip-hop, blues, rock

and the righteous sounds

of revolution.

the people demand a better world

built on the

blood and bones,

and sacrifices of a future people

willing to put everything on the line

in painting a diversely colored world.

the people need a communist revolution.

funny how a car ride to the mall,

a song,

can move thinking

in different ways.

This is a poster child for SHOW instead of tell. I was very much submerged in each of the different "moods" of your message. You show how easy it is to get sucked in to a mindset, be it music or what movies people watch, etc. I love how you seemingly use this simple life observation as a way to convey a much larger & more important idea: be careful what we consume! Not so sure it is a 'communist revolution' we need. It certainly is an anti old school, money buys power revolt and your piece certainly articulates question and change!

This is the day the music died . . . and died . . . and died!

"Give peace a chance" as John would express.
I really like this poem and can so relate...the music of the times is such a reflection of those times....we all remember the sixties and its music...and the revolution...the outward expression of love and peace.
Will today's music be remembered 50 years from now?
I doubt much if any of it will...a strange times we live in now....everything, as your poem expresses, is turned inward. My car radio is only tuned to oldies channels....and me along with them.
