Love in the Time of Katrina II

The air was stagnat

with humidity,

the pines and oaks

stood stoically

in the stillness

and Medea fell hard for Jason.

Betrayal

like the eye of Katrina,

was first calm

until the wind changed,

spread, increased,

intensified.

Medea gave everything,

including her brothers,

so Jason could flee

with his golden fleece.

But Medea was left

with the thunderous downpour

of a hollow heart.

Betrayal

Jason’s betrayal was

social,

complete,

destructive;

Katrina’s betrayal

natural,

unrelenting,

catastrophic.

Betrayal though

is the sticky humidity

and category 5 force

of a society

deep in the storms

of social inequalities

and patriarchal traditions.

Betrayal

even fourteen years later

continues

as black folks remain

driven from New Orleans

in category 5 oppression.

There is no love in betrayal,

whether in the destruction

of a natural disaster,

or in the ugly social relations

of men over women.

I am very impressed that you can, once again, present a tapestry of how it feels when a stormy stretch rips up one's life, be it an actual meteorological event or a heart crash . . . and these two poems feel totally different, like you've painted a completely different scene in each. In this I get the feeling you are playing around . . . even tho these are serious messages . . . but I feel you playing with the possibilities of presenting your message (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

another gem...likening Katrina to the imbalance in the world right now...between sexual equality and rich vs. poor...
a disaster for sure...
can this damage be rebuilt...
maybe there needs to be another Ark built...
