Melodies and MemoriesA Poem by redzone….*****….Melodies And Memories
The sunrise sparkled colors across the Serengeti as morning dew dripped life onto the blood soil. As the Plains awoke to the morning rays, I imagined being mesmerized by Kilimanjaro’s shadow, and walking through tall grass, listening to talking drums that beat with African life.
I remember our own Serengeti Plain that stretched out beyond the backyard. It was 1993, my first trip to visit mom and dad in Florida and as I sat out on the lanai, I saw the Hawk circle, then dove, as he hunted for fish in the canal. We called the field, ‘Serengeti 2’, and every morning, we safaried over coffee as the sun rose, and pastel shaped clouds roamed across the sky. All the while, pink flamingos sang the blues in front yards.
Mom would play Brubeck’s ‘Take Five”, and its melody would mix with the sounds of afternoon rain, uniting with Cuban salsa and African township jive. The jazzy riffs cooled the Florida heat with bougainvillea fantasies, stirred heart beats and dancing feet.
I remembered these simple things, They flooded my mind on the 27th, with Virgo’s early rising and Wasuton Wi’s setting. There is an emptiness in this moon, its shine is dulled by the loss of music, both hers and his gone, the way the sweet smell of African violets is lost on the wind.
Everything comes and goes; even Leo becomes Virgo as Time’s journey continues and arrows in one direction leaving me with melodies and memories; the soft touch of her gentle hands; his words only heard far too late.
Memory’s melody plays now in African blues, with a jazzy twist.
