Philosophical Implications of Navel Lint

There are many ways

to see others

and yourself;

to see yourself

with others;

that sense of community,

of being part of something bigger,

more important.

Not in some idealistic aura,

but as human beings,

whose ‘nature’ is complex,

diverse,

capable of almost anything.

And is in constant flux,

motion and development;

a product, not of a universal plan,

or some ‘outer intelligence’,

but as a result

of evolutionary constraints

and revolutionary changes.

One of the saddest things,

I think,

is to get so caught up

in self-reflection,

we lose sight of

being part of this larger world,

we go off looking for internal solutions

as all around us,

the world burns.

Won’t we better ‘find ouselves’

by putting out these fires of destruction,

joining others in societal restructuring,

than in simply

trying to find our own place

in the universe?

Where do our responsibilities

as human beings lie?

Joining humanities struggle

for liberation?

Or in contemplating

the philosophical question

of why there is lint

in our navel?

The issues we find in ourselves

are not isolated,

but societal,

even as we feel we are alone.

Are we not, after all,

our sisters and brothers keepers?

Or do we say this

just to feel good

so we can sleep at night?

Navel gazing is the new pastime. Those of us who are of an older ilk wonder why. This is a very nice piece. It lends itself well to an essay or prose format, but works too, as it is currently formatted.
