Winter’s White Melody

There is a sadness

listening to snow fall.

If you listen closely,

ignoring all the white,

you can hear the soft melody

being played

as each flake flutters

in Winter’s wind.

It is a song of Mistletoe

humming above doorways

announcing Yule time,

and Evergreen scents.

It is also a past tense

when she would sing,

make eggnog,

or walk with a smile

that would melt

even a Grinch.

I remember

the very last tree,

a Douglas Fir,

decorated in blue lights

silver bells,

and holding hand-made ornaments

from my brother and me.

A memory remembered,

carried on today’s snowfall,

whispering the melody

of her voice

among this cold,

Winter’s white.

I’m not a very sentimental person, but this one reached way down inside & grabbed my toes & pulled me inside out! *sheesh!* I get the feeling “she” is “mom” . . . and there must be a good portion of your readers who are missing a special mom all the time. You paint your details slowly & deliberately, like a tapestry unfolding as we wait with baited breath. I can see the exact scene you portray, but at the same time, using familiarities that can fit different scenes for any reader, too. This is written with a sense of wonder & you’ve really touched me (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

The Christmas season always brings melancholy, even in the first snowfall. It finds us, no matter how much we think we've grown up to not be touched by it any more.

Beautifully written, Curt!

dear Redzone... a perfect Christmas 🎄 melody with mistletoe and the scent of balsam fir to stir the dreams of yesteryear.
The hearth of Yuletide and eggnog shared will linger in your heart ❤️ forevermore.
Je 't adore ... truly, Pat
