Being Human

(some thoughts)

I.

it is strange living among older people,

watching the daily struggle

for life

in a world

where loneliness lurks in every shadow;

where death is greedy

and commonplace.

                                    II.

it is strange living among older people,

                                    some still enjoying life

                                    while fighting pain;

                                    some resigned each day

                                    will be their last.

but all know the man in Black-

                                    Death beckons seductively.

               III.

it is strange living among older people.

grey hair sparkle wisdom of ages gone by

yet alive in minds that wonder

what’s up with kids these days?

it’s not an abstract “honor” they seek,

rather the usefulness of their life experiences,

mostly learned through blood and sweat.

                                     IV.

it is strange living among older people.

                                     the sad shaped eyes

                                     the humorous smiles

the antics of nothing to lose

and hope when old, I am as spry.

then this morning looking in the mirror-

ooops, an old man stares back!

....thanks for reading.... I realize this music is a bit strange to go with the poem, but being here for over a month, I know everyone here in their own way would love to "get jiggy with it"....

I relate so well with your words here, Curt. I live in an over 55 community and when I first moved in, I was not yet 50. The "old people" were interesting to watch. I knew I was far younger than they were and I knew I would never act as they did. 15 years later, though, I am one of them.....and the face that stares back at me has plenty of wrinkles. If we are fortunate, we will all be those old people one day...and we WILL get jiggy with it! :) Very nice write, my friend. Lydi**

ah Lydi, I think you would be one of those women I mentioned to Jacob below... thank you for your re.. read more
I remember spending time with my grandmother when I was very young, thinking that she'd live forever. Looking back upon the time now, there was so much I wish I had asked her - answers to questions that I'll never have answers to. I've already surpassed both my parents and older sister in age, so every year, every day now, is certainly a gift. I don't see it as aging anymore, now its become more of a privilege.

Your introspective writes are some of your best, Curt. I hope you are well and know you are thought of!

This is very good Curt, and I absolutely love the form. It is very perfect for the theme. Those eyes still sparkle ... as does your pen.

Mirrors should be banned!!! You sound very young in spirit though, and your poem is well written and sincere.

you made me do some self-reflection...
