Kilimanjaro Rises

Kilimanjaro Rises

A Poem by redzone

Kilimanjaro Rises

Kilimanjaro rises to meet the moon
as elephants roam the Serengeti below.
It was here I last saw your smile
so many winters ago.
I saw ages travel,
snow melting in miles
feeding fertile valleys
with wild, white Marigolds.
Sister elephants
told stories of the lion’s hunt
and carried you on their backs
into African dreams
and starlit serenades.
Back when “the People”
began their long journey into
human nature consciousness.
~~~
Kilimanjaro rises,
its long shadow casts us in pain
and drought and night;
easy prey for oppressions might.
But within the very journey
we began lies the means
for our freedom;
to be cleansed by African rain
and the salvation of our humanity.
Sister elephants will tell our story,
carry us on their backs and
into world wide dreams.
~~~
Kilimanjaro rises to meet the moon.
It’s snow nourishes the Serengeti below and
it will be here that I see
your smile once again
as it is reflected in moonlit.

to commune with nature and the depths of humanity's awareness of its strengths and frailties - its stewardship towards the land - and to see that smile again :)

The snows of Kilimanjaro is one of my favourite Hemingway short stories. You captured its essence and something a little extra. wonderful.

The mountains reach for the moon and elephants tell the stories....great personification. There is a hint of romance in this one. "It was here I last saw your smile so many winters ago." Hmmm....is it Mother Nature who smiled or a lover? Not sure...and I like the uncertainty of that. Man's inhumane treatment of not only the elephants, but of the land itself has gone on for more years than either of us have been alive. Hopefully our environment will become more important to people in this generation. You always carry the banner against oppression.....and you do it so"nicely"! :) Lydi**

they will carry us into dreams....i felt a bit of Toto here mixed with Hemmingway's "hills like white elephants"
there was a time when people journeyed into consciousness...but wow---why are more not doing that now.

love this piece, Curt...

Oppression has to give in to love and peace and sharing...
